These chemical messengers are deeply involved in nerve cells communication with one another. An imbalance among the neurotransmitters can disrupt communication, leading to various mental problems. Foods that Help
Tryptophan. This essential amino acid is a necessary building block for serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, appetite, sleep, and other functions. Some food sources rich in tryptophan are bean and other legumes, nuts, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Folic Acid and Folates. These are vitamins essential for the nervous system. Studies have shown that folic acid is the vitamin that most influence depression. Some sources of food rich in folic acid are lentils, beans, wheat germ, spinach, lettuce, asparagus, broccoli, walnuts, avocados, and oranges.
