Culture vs Creator: Who Wins?

Let’s be real: prejudice isn’t just “out there.” It’s in all of us, in different ways. Whether it shows up as subtle judgment, cultural superiority, classism, or flat-out racism, it’s stubborn. It hides behind upbringing, tradition, fear, or even comfort.

But here’s the hard truth—God never gave us permission to hold onto it.

“For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7

We like to believe we see people clearly. But often, our vision is clouded by assumptions and inherited bias. And even when we want to do better, letting go of prejudice can feel like letting go of part of our identity or community.

But that’s exactly the point of following Christ. You don’t get to cling to your ego and still carry His cross.

Jesus spent his life walking toward the marginalized. He chose outsiders, talked to women no one else would speak to, touched the “unclean,” and flipped tables when systems favored the powerful. He wasn’t neutral. He was radically inclusive.

“There is no favoritism with God.” — Romans 2:11

So why do we still act like some people are more valuable than others? Why are churches still segregated by culture, class, or style? Why are we more comfortable with people who look, vote, and think like us?

Maybe the better question is this:

  • What parts of your thinking still reflect your culture more than your Creator?

  • Are you truly okay with loving everyone—or just the ones who fit your filter?

God doesn’t ask us to erase difference. He asks us to erase division.

True equality starts with humility—a willingness to admit we’ve gotten it wrong. It’s not about shame. It’s about alignment. Aligning ourselves with a God who sees past skin, background, and bank accounts. A God who doesn’t care how we’re categorized—only how we love.

We can’t claim to follow Jesus while holding onto subtle superiority. We either live like everyone matters, or we don’t.

God already made the call. He sees us all, equally.
The only question left is
: will we learn to see like He does?
