Culture vs Creator: Who Wins?

Image
Let’s be real: prejudice isn’t just “out there.” It’s in all of us, in different ways. Whether it shows up as subtle judgment, cultural superiority, classism, or flat-out racism, it’s stubborn. It hides behind upbringing, tradition, fear, or even comfort. But here’s the hard truth—God never gave us permission to hold onto it. “For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7 We like to believe we see people clearly. But often, our vision is clouded by assumptions and inherited bias. And even when we want to do better, letting go of prejudice can feel like letting go of part of our identity or community. But that’s exactly the point of following Christ. You don’t get to cling to your ego and still carry His cross. Jesus spent his life walking toward the marginalized. He chose outsiders, talked to women no one else would speak to, touched the “unclean,” and flipped tables when systems favored the powerfu...

What's Your Health IQ?

Image
We continue this week to look at preventable differences in health status and outcomes between different population groups. Addressing health disparities is crucial for achieving equity and improving the overall health of the population. The second approach or strategy we will look at this week to help with this initiative is: Promoting Health Literacy. This means ensuring that people have the knowledge and skills to understand their health and make informed decisions. Nutrition literacy plays an important role in improving health. Health literacy programs are an effective means to increase knowledge and awareness about healthy eating and the importance of a higher intake of fruits and vegetables. The increased awareness and knowledge can lead to lifestyle modifications and support healthy nutrition goals. The Good News About Fruits and Vegetables The National Cancer Institute recommends eating 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables every...

The 'Merry-Heart' Power in Your Thoughts: Does It Really Have Health Benefits?

Image
Your Mind and Your Health Are Linked What if the most influential medicine you ever take… starts with a single thought? We live in a culture that divides health into categories—mental, physical, emotional. But your body doesn’t operate in compartments. It responds to your internal world as one interconnected system. And at the center of that system? Your thoughts. Every thought creates an electrical signal. That signal triggers chemical messengers—hormones and neurotransmitters—that influence your digestion, sleep, mood, immunity, and even your energy. That means anxiety, hope, fear, and peace don’t just “live in your head.” They have ripple effects that reach every system in your body. The Gut-Brain Connection: Real, and Electric Your gut isn’t just digesting food—it’s helping you process life. It’s often called the “second brain” because it produces up to 90% of your body’s serotonin, the neurotransmitter responsible for mood, calm, and clarity. And it communicates with your br...

April -- National Minority Health Month

Image
April is National Minority Health Month. The focus for this month is designed to raise awareness about improving the health of racial and ethnic minority communities and reducing health disparities. Health disparities refer to the differences in health outcomes and the factors that influence them, such as access to healthcare, living conditions, and social determinants of health, that disproportionately affect certain groups. Tackling health disparities requires a multi-faceted approach that addresses the underlying social, economic, and environmental factors that contribute to them. There are ways and approaches to help address and reduce health disparities. The first one we will look at this week is: Improving Access to Healthcare . This means ensuring that everyone has access to quality healthcare, regardless of their background or location. Having proper quality healthcare helps improve the health and well-being of individuals and populations. Implementing The Eight Laws of Health ...

Is Your Value Up For Debate? Check This Non-crypto Currency Out

Image
The Currency of Worth. . . And the One That Can’t Be Cashed In, Right? Cash was once everything. Flash a few bills, and doors opened. Then gold—shiny, scarce, and stashed in guarded vaults. Then diamonds—marketed as forever, but really just carbon under pressure. After that? Sapphire glass. Rare-earth metals. Things buried deep and dug up to signal status. Now we’ve got Ethereum, Bitcoin, and coins with dogs on them. Somehow, they all scream: worth. But let’s pause. What Actually Makes Something Valuable? Is it rarity? Popularity? Usefulness? Or is it just... perception? We chase what sparkles. We invest in trends, hoping they’ll lift us up. We flex cars, clothes, gadgets, likes, followers—currencies that help us feel like we matter. We measure ourselves by them. Live by them. Judge others with them. But there’s a catch: All of them are temporary. Gold can be stolen. Crypto can crash. Followers unfollow. Cool goes cold. Even the “social currencies” we depend on—talent, influence...

God Has No IRS: Why Faith Isn’t Based on How Much You Can Pay

Image
Tax season is stressful. Between forms, deadlines, and the fear of missing something important, many of us carry the pressure of making sure everything adds up just right. In our financial world, if you mess up—there are penalties. If you forget something—there are consequences. It’s easy to feel like everything depends on your ability to get it right. But here’s the good news: God doesn’t operate like the IRS. When it comes to our faith, God isn’t looking for a perfect “spiritual tax return.” He’s not waiting to audit your life, hunting for mistakes. There are no hidden fees, no interest charges, and no fine print. In Christ, the debt has already been paid —in full (Colossians 2:14). This doesn’t mean we live carelessly. It means we live freely . We don’t give, serve, or worship to “earn points” with God. We do it in response to His grace, not to gain it. Where the world says, “You owe,” Jesus says, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The cross canceled every spiritual debt. You don’t have...
