What Do You Do When Someone Is Not Okay? Have You Tried PFA?

Image
When disaster hits, the human brain does not always ask deep questions first. It asks survival questions. Am I safe? Who is with me? What just happened? What do I do next? That is why Psychological First Aid, or PFA, is so practical. It is not about diagnosing someone. It is not about giving a perfect speech. It is not about becoming a therapist in five minutes. It is about humane presence in the first moments of crisis. You help reduce stress. You help the person feel safer. You listen. You calm the emotional storm. You connect them to support. You help them take the next step. And for those who want to become more prepared, some organizations offer PFA training or certification so ordinary people can learn how to respond with calm, care, and confidence when crisis hits. Simple? Yes. Easy? Not always. Because when people are breaking down, many of us get nervous. We talk too much. We quote too fast. We explain too soon. We try to fix pain before we have honored it. But crisis do...

Sugar: What Keeps You Hooked?

Image
The Not So Sweet Side of Sugar Who doesn’t like something sweet? We all do. In fact, sugar provides energy to the body. Sugar occurs naturally in all foods that contain carbohydrates, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, and so on. Consuming whole foods and plant foods that contain natural sugar is okay because these foods have high amounts of fiber, essential minerals, and antioxidants; and since the body digests these foods slowly, the sugar in them offers a steady supply of energy to our cells. In actuality, a high intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and some cancers. The problems occur when we consume refined sugar. That is, process sugar that food manufacturers add to products to improve taste and extend shelf life. Foods rich in refined sugars are often heavily processed and they contain virtually no vitamins, minerals, protein, fat, fiber, or other beneficial compounds. In...

Before Rogue AI, There Was Ai: The Bible’s Strange Warning for the Digital Age

Image
Rogue AI and the Oldest Con in the World Long before we worried about rogue AI, there were rogues. In the 1964 TV series The Rogues , David Niven played Alec Fleming, a master con artist with style, charm, and dangerous elegance. He did not win by force. He won by reading people. He studied desire. He spotted greed. He mirrored what the mark wanted to see. Then he built a beautiful illusion around their weakness. That is the genius of the con. It does not look like an attack. It looks like an opportunity. It looks like help. It looks like the answer you have been waiting for. And that is where the story becomes spiritual. The Bible warns that deception rarely arrives wearing horns and carrying a pitchfork. Paul writes, “Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14, KJV). Translation? Darkness knows how to dress well. Lies can speak softly. Manipulation can smile. A trap can look like wisdom if it is wrapped in enough beauty, speed, convenience, and e...

Pure Air Amidst All The Smoke: What are you Breathing?

Image
The Air Isn't the Only Thing You're Breathing My son came inside coughing. Not the kind of cough that makes you glance up for a second and move on. The kind that immediately gets your attention. A few moments earlier, he had been exposed to strong chlorine fumes. And for the next several minutes, one thought kept replaying in my mind: What happens when the very thing designed to sustain life becomes contaminated? It's a question most of us never ask. Until breathing becomes difficult. Until smoke fills the sky. Until an air-quality alert appears on your phone. Until your child is standing in front of you trying to catch his breath. Recently, millions of people across North America have experienced that reality firsthand as smoke from massive wildfires in Canada and parts of Minnesota drifted across states, turning blue skies gray and sending air-quality readings soaring. Something invisible suddenly became impossible to ignore. And that's when a deeper thought hit me. W...

World Cup: Pray Like You Play

Image
As the world watches the World Cup, millions of fans are captivated by the passion, discipline, and sacrifice displayed on the field. Behind every goal, every victory, and every championship run are years of training, self-denial, and commitment. Athletes willingly endure discomfort because they have their eyes fixed on a prize. The apostle Paul used a similar picture when he wrote: “Everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:25-27, NKJV). Think about that. World Cup players are pursuing a trophy that will eventually gather dust. The cheers will fade. Records will be broken. Another tournament will come. Yet they willingly give everything for a temporary re...

Is Your Gift Really Yours?

Image
Imagine spending years building something extraordinary. Your career. Your influence. Your body. Your talent. Your reputation. Now imagine waking up tomorrow and discovering it could all disappear. Uncomfortable thought, isn't it? Most of us don't spend much time there. We're busy chasing goals, building brands, collecting achievements, and proving our worth. Social media rewards performance. Society celebrates success. The message is clear: the more accomplished you become, the more valuable you are. Or so we're told. That's one reason athletes capture our attention. Take Noa Chokufa, one of Great Britain's rising young 400-meter talents. Recently, she posted an impressive 55.55-second performance in the 400 meters. Most people see the stopwatch and the result. What they don't see are the countless hours of training, the sacrifices, the setbacks, and the discipline required to shave fractions of a second from a race. It's remarkable. But perhaps the mo...

Rosemary and Other Herbs to Boost Memory

Image
Have you had this happen…You are all ready to go somewhere and you can’t find your car keys? Maybe you’ve walked into a room and suddenly your mind goes blank. What am I here for? The problem is so common that people see it as a “senior moment” and laugh it off. If you suspect your experience is more than a “senior moment,” there are a number of herbal preparations that can assist with memory issues, including Rosemary, Periwinkle, Ginkgo biloba, Gotu kola, and Sage . These five botanicals support cognitive function through a combination of increased cerebral blood flow, neurotransmitter regulation, and antioxidant protection. While they share overlapping neuroprotective benefits, their primary mechanisms differ. Here is a little bit on how they work: 1. Rosemary : Works by stimulating brain activity, and protecting the brain from oxidative stress, and preserving neurotransmitters associated with memory. It also reduces the buildup of toxic proteins associated with cognitive decline...

Men's History Month: Honoring God Through Your Body

Image
June marks the annual celebration of Men’s Health Awareness Month, a time to focus on the importance of men’s health and well-being. One critical component of men’s health is engaging in preventive care. True strength is not just about muscle mass or physical endurance. In God's design, a man's wellness is completely interconnected, spanning his body, mind, and spirit. Scripture reminds us that taking care of our physical health is a foundational act of stewardship and gratitude toward our Creator. Your body is God’s temple. When we view our bodies as a temple rather than just a vehicle, our approach to daily health shifts from an obligation to an act of worship. God has given men specific responsibilities to lead, protect, and provide, but fulfilling that calling requires a commitment to proactive self-care. A sedentary lifestyle and obesity can contribute to various health issues. This month is the opportunity to recommit to an active lifestyle and work toward achieving a hea...

The Daily Battle for a Father's Mind Begins at Breakfast: Every Bite Writes or Erases a Memory

Image
What comes to mind when you hear the word manhood ? Strength? Independence? Providing for a family? Protecting those you love? Many men spend decades building careers, accumulating knowledge, developing skills, and earning respect. Yet there is a question that quietly waits in the background, one that few of us ask until much later: What good is strength if you lose the ability to remember who you are? It is a sobering thought. We celebrate physical strength. We admire discipline. We respect resilience. Yet some of the greatest challenges facing men today are not found in the gym, the boardroom, or the workplace. They are unfolding silently between the ears. Memory loss. Cognitive decline. Dementia. Alzheimer’s disease. The numbers continue to rise, and neuroscience is increasingly revealing that the brain is not simply a victim of aging. To a surprising degree, it reflects the accumulated choices of a lifetime. Think about that for a moment. What if caring for your mind is one of...

When Light 'Speaks' Healing Into Your Body: How light, clean living, and God’s design help the body remember how to heal

Image
You can have the newest phone, the strongest battery, the best camera, the fastest processor, and the cleanest design. But if the signal is blocked, the message does not get through. No bars. Dropped calls. Frozen screen. Delayed messages. Frustration. And here is the wild thought: the human body works with communication too. Your body is not a random machine. It is a living communication network. Every cell, nerve, muscle, joint, gland, organ, and tissue is constantly sending and receiving signals. The question is not whether the body is communicating. The question is: are we helping the signal or blocking it? Light. Movement. Touch. Breath. Rest. Living food. Faith. Order. These are not just wellness words. They are signals. They are instructions. They are part of the language the body was designed to understand. This is where science and Scripture start shaking hands. Modern health practitioners use a therapy known as low-level laser therapy , also called cold laser therapy or phot...

Spritual Agnosia: Can Stewardship Be The Best Answer... Or is it Neuroscience...Or is it Psychology?

Image
A brilliant man once looked at his wife and reached for her head as if she were his hat. Think about that. His eyes worked. His brain could notice details. He could describe shapes, colors, features, angles, and objects. But something deeper had broken: he could not recognize the whole person in front of him. The condition is called visual agnosia — a neurological disorder where a person can see, but cannot properly recognize or interpret what is being seen. In Dr. P’s case, it also included prosopagnosia , often called “face blindness,” which made it difficult for him to recognize people by their faces. So he could see parts. He could not perceive meaning. And maybe that is not just a neurological story. Maybe it is a mirror. Because many of us are living with spiritually fragmented vision. We can see pieces of life, but we miss the whole. We see money, but miss stewardship. We see attraction, but miss covenant. We see success, but miss calling. We see stress, but miss what the...

God put medicine in the garden before man put it in a bottle: Overlooked Evidence

Image
There comes a moment when you stop arguing with the evidence of transformed lives. You meet the people. You hear the stories. You see the tears. You watch the energy return. You listen as someone says, “My numbers changed.” “My pain dropped.” “My body started responding.” “My doctor could not believe it.” “I feel alive again.” And after you have heard this not once, not twice, but hundreds of times, you begin to ask a different question. Not, “Can food really matter that much?” But: What has been missing from our food, our soil, our bodies, and our faith that made us forget God’s original pharmacy? Before there was a drugstore, there was a garden. Genesis 1:29 says, “Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed…and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” God did not begin human nourishment with artificial fragments. He began with whole food, grown from living soil, carrying minerals, vitamins, fiber, antioxida...

The Judge Who Took Our Sentence

Image
There’s a quiet accusation sitting in the hearts of many people: God isn’t fair. Maybe it rises when tragedy hits someone who’s trying their best. Maybe it comes after unanswered prayers, abuse, loss, betrayal, or years of suffering. People look at the world and think, If God were fair, none of this would happen. But what if our definition of fairness is incomplete? The Bible paints a picture of God that is both terrifyingly just and unbelievably merciful. And honestly, if we really understood justice, we’d stop demanding fairness so quickly. Scripture says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). That verse levels the playing field. The rebel, the liar, the addict, the proud church member, the atheist, the pastor — all guilty before a holy God. We tend to compare ourselves to other people and conclude we’re “good enough,” but God compares us to His perfection. And suddenly fairness doesn’t sound so comforting anymore. If God were only fair, e...

In all the 'Redistricting' Going On, Who’s Getting the Most Influence on Your Life?

Image
Every heart has a map. Some lines were drawn by childhood wounds. Some were drawn by culture. Some were drawn by disappointment. Some were drawn by ambition. Some were drawn by the need to be liked, affirmed, respected, or understood. And some lines were drawn so quietly that we never stopped to ask: Who benefits from the way my heart has been divided? That is the danger of an unexamined inner life. It can look successful on the outside while being spiritually divided on the inside. One section belongs to God. Another section belongs to pride. Another belongs to resentment. Another belongs to public image. Another belongs to appetite. Another belongs to old pain that keeps influencing present decisions. And before long, we are not living from wholeness. We are living from fragments. We say God is first, but our schedule tells another story. We say we trust Him, but our reactions reveal another ruler. We say we forgive, but our memories keep reopening the courtroom. We...

When Peace Sounds Like A 'Maybe', Is It War?

Image
There is something exhausting...  ...about watching powerful voices speak with thunder on Monday and whisper with uncertainty by Tuesday. One moment, the message sounds final. The next moment, it bends. Then it hardens. Then it softens again. Threats become conditions. Conditions become exceptions. Exceptions become confusion. And the people watching are left asking, “So what is it? Are we safe or not? Is this peace or just a pause?” But let’s not act like this only happens on the world stage. It happens in us, too. We say, “I’m done,” then we go back. We say, “I forgive,” but we keep rehearsing the wound. We say, “God, I trust You,” but panic the moment we cannot control the outcome. This is why Jesus’ words feel so clean, so strong, so refreshing: “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’” (Matthew 5:37, ESV). No fog. No manipulation. No emotional hostage-taking. Just truth with integrity. Tony Robbins describes six human needs that often drive behavior: certainty, variety...

The Danger of a Divided Heart

Image
We live in a culture that worships "options." We love keeping our doors open, our feet in two different worlds, and our hearts non-committal. But when I look at Scripture, I don’t see a God who is interested in lukewarm "maybe." I see a God who calls us to a radical, unwavering steadfastness. The Apostle James warns us that the double-minded man is "unstable in all his ways" (James 1:8). If you’re drifting—if you’re waiting to see which way the wind blows before you decide to obey—you aren't following Jesus. You’re just wandering. Consult the Creator, Not the Culture Maybe you feel a nudge that something in your life needs to shift. Your career, a habit, or how you spend your time. Most people’s first instinct is to poll their friends or look for a "sign" that fits their desires. Stop. Before you move an inch, you must consult the Creator of your soul. We serve a God who says, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go...

Stop Behaving Better Because He's Watching...: Do it For This Instead

Image
...His Presence Changes the Room Something shifted, and everyone could feel it. It was not simply politics. It was not merely ceremony. It was not another predictable moment in Washington. It was something deeper. It was presence . When a global figure stepped onto American soil, the atmosphere changed. People slowed down. They chose their words with more care. The tone softened. Honor seemed to walk back into the room. Dignity found a seat at the table. For a brief moment, the usual noise lowered, and something rare began to rise. The moment carried real weight. It was not forced, and it was not staged. People could genuinely feel it. That is the power of presence. It makes people aware. It makes people adjust. It makes people remember that some moments deserve more than noise, reaction, and division. A Nation Remembered Its Better Voice As the United States moves toward its 250th anniversary, this kind of moment matters. It invites more than celebration. It invites reflection....

The Absence of Strength in Gluttony Is The Demise of Freedom

Image
We live in a world that worships MORE.... More protein. More supplements. More cheat meals. More snacks. More caffeine. More “I earned this.” More “treat yourself.” More “one more bite won’t hurt.” Until it does. Because the body has a way of telling the truth, even when the appetite lies. Biophysics and biochemistry both remind us of something modern life keeps trying to ignore: the human body is built on balance. Not excess. Not chaos. Not indulgence dressed up as freedom. Balance. The right amount of water keeps cells alive, but too much water can throw off sodium levels and become dangerous. Protein is essential, but excess can burden the body in ways people rarely think about. Copper is necessary in tiny amounts, yet too much becomes toxic. The same nutrient that helps sustain life can, in excess, start working against it. That should make us stop and think. Because gluttony is not just about eating “bad food.” It is about disordered desire. It is about losing the wisdom of ...

Restless Hearts & Resting Souls: Ambition In the Christian Life

Image
Can I be honest with you for a second? I've wrestled with this one hard. I've sat in churches where ambition was celebrated like a virtue — hustle harder, dream bigger, God wants you blessed. And I've sat in others where contentment was preached so heavily it felt like a sin to want  anything . Neither felt right. So I went back to Scripture, because that's where the tension actually gets resolved. Paul didn't say ambition was the problem In Philippians 4, Paul drops one of the most memorized lines in the Bible. But read the whole thing carefully: "I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content... I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Philippians 4:11, 13 — KJV Notice what he says: contentment is  learned . It's not a personality trait. It's a spiritual discipline cultivated through seasons of abundance and seasons of need. But then — almost in the same breath — he says he can do  all things  through Chris...
