Food, Faith, and Starvation: What 'Nutritional Deficiencies' Are We Missing?

In the world of nutrition, macronutrients and micronutrients are both essential to sustaining life. Macronutrients—proteins, fats, and carbohydrates—are the foundational building blocks of energy, muscle repair, and bodily function. Without them, we wither. Micronutrients—vitamins and minerals—are needed in smaller amounts, but they play critical roles in immune function, cellular repair, and overall well-being. A deficiency in either category can lead to weakness, disease, or dysfunction.

The same is true for faith. Some elements of spiritual growth serve as our macronutrients, sustaining us day in and day out. Others act as micronutrients, not always obvious but necessary for strength, endurance, and resilience.

Macronutrients of Faith: The Essentials for Growth

Like protein, carbs, and fats, these are the big three that fuel a life of faith:

  1. Prayer (The Protein of Faith) – Just as protein repairs and builds muscle, prayer strengthens and fortifies our relationship with God. Without it, we weaken. "Pray without ceasing." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

  2. Scripture (The Carbohydrates of Spiritual Energy) – The Word of God is the fuel that sustains our daily walk. "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God." (Matthew 4:4)

  3. Community (The Fats That Keep Us Healthy) – Just as healthy fats regulate hormones and protect organs, a faith community nourishes and protects our spiritual health. "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." (Proverbs 27:17)

Micronutrients of Faith: The Subtle Yet Powerful Necessities

A lack of micronutrients may not be obvious at first, but over time, the deficiencies manifest:

  • Gratitude (Vitamin C of the Soul) – A deficiency leads to negativity, burnout, and bitterness. "Give thanks in all circumstances." (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
  • Humility (The Magnesium of Character) – Magnesium regulates over 300 enzymes in the body, much like humility regulates the heart’s posture before God. "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." (James 4:6)
  • Patience (The Iron of Perseverance) – A lack of iron causes fatigue. Likewise, impatience drains endurance. "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength." (Isaiah 40:31)

Questions for Reflection

  1. Are you spiritually malnourished? What "macronutrient" of faith do you need to replenish?
  2. Could your struggles be due to a micronutrient deficiency—a lack of patience, gratitude, or humility?
  3. What daily habits could help you build a more balanced spiritual diet?
