Your Brain is an Ecosystem, You Should be Cultivating It

The human brain has been described as the most complex structure in the universe. The brain contains around 86 billion neurons, 85 billion other cells, and over 100 trillion connections. The brain and the body are connected by nerve bundles that moves muscles and keep organs functioning. Nerves also provide sensory stimuli from the body for the brain to process. It should be no surprise, then, that a healthy brain begins with a healthy body, which includes the heart too. Having a healthy, strong heart is essential to brain health. The stronger the pumping of the heart, the more efficient the functioning of the brain. Every time your heart beats, your arteries carry 20 to 25 percent of your blood to the brain. Keeping your heart healthy and strong requires proper diet and regular exercise. Exercise also increases blood flow to the brain and physically alters the network of blood vessels servicing neurons.

The brain is 80% water. Your brain needs water daily for proper functioning.  Even mild dehydration can lead to major reductions in memory and brain performance. Drinking the proper amount of water each day helps your brain cells communicate with each other, and also clears out toxins and waste that impair brain function.

Your brain needs the proper amount of sleep.  Studies have shown that people who sleep less than six hours per night have decreased blood flow to the brain. Sleep is important to a number of brain functions, including how the neurons in the brain communicate with each other, and for proper cognitive and behavioral function.

Brain Facts

* The brain grows more fit with new kinds of learning. * Your brain’s storage capacity is considered virtually unlimited. * Brain information travels up to an impressive 268 miles per hour. * Every time you recall a memory or have a new thought, you create a connection in the brain.
